Oil leak

Post by billybluesky1 »

Hi Any advice or comments welcome
recently I have an oil leak nothing big, but enough to leave a puddle about 7cm round in 24 hours, obviously more the longer it stands, its dripping from the exhaust/turbo flange going into the exhaust, which is obviously not completely sealing otherwise it would be running into the H pipe, It seems to be only since I put the bike on the centre stand which is standing on a piece of 2 cm thick piece of ply to enable me to lift the rear wheel enough for cleaning, now I know lifting the front wheel often stops oil draining into the turbo , but I would have thought the check valve would have stopped that anyway, do people still only fill to the lower level? as it seemed to be worse if I filled it up. I`ve recently fitted an Evergreen recon turbo and check valve, any thoughts?

Edit lowered the back of the bike and drip virtually stopped,

The check valve supply line should have stopped that. But if the turbo is in need of rebuilding the oil will leak past the seals and get into the turbo one housing and compressor housing. Thus dripping and blowing. Does the engine smoke at all while riding after 10 or 15 minutes?? IF smokes all the time the turbo likely has bearing, shaft and bore wear needs rebuilt. Let us know. :popcorn

Hi thanks for the reply, I just took a look it`s still a very slow drip, maybe 3" puddle every 24 hours I`ll take off the check valve feed pipe during the week and see if its passing, Turbo rebuilt by yourself earlier this year.

Can't show photo but, disconnected the hose from check valve to turbo and put aerosol caps unde the hose, the check valve, and the turbo airline, just a few drops under the check valve, nothing under turbo , but a cap full under the feed hose that comes from the top of the turbo, any suggestions? The turbo sump pump appears to be fine when I recently checked it.

Just checked again , after four or five days its leaked around half a litre of oil through the feed line from the top of the turbo, iv`e topped up the oil a couple of times, could it be possibly feeding oil into the turbo from the drain? is there a check valve in the scavenge pump?

The breather tube that goes into the scavenger sump hasn't come loose or dropped out?

Take a look at these images and also page 186 of the base manual. The images may give you a clue about what the issue could be. :thumbup

Hi Jez thanks for the reply, looking at the diagram I take it that the only way its getting oil in that line is if the sub pan is flooding from the main oil supply, before i got the turbo re-furbished I had already checked the tube and scavenge pump but I guess doing it again will have to be done, the check valve it ok so the turbo must be filling from the drain ane equalising to the level of the main oil supply.

Problem seems to be solved !
It would appear either when I had the sump off to replace the pressure relief valve or when I had the sump off to check the tube the mini sump O ring was omitted , either it fell off or was stuck to the sump, solution , I replaced all the O rings on the sump and mini sump , If it had been omitted when i first fitted the new prv it wouldn`t have been as noticeable due to the knackered turbo seals, so a lesson learned,

That is a good outcome. Such an easy thing causing all sorts of hassle. :clap :thumbup
