Hello gang, I last posted here awhile back, I was searching for a fuel tank. That was a fruitless search however on Facebook I was contacted by someone who recommended Moyer Tank Repair. I sent them my rotted fuel tank and they sent it back good as new sans paint which I was able to get done along with the reproduction decal kit from RD Decals.
I’m ready to take the next step and get it road worthy. It’s been sitting for 20+ years. It’s in good shape 6400 miles. Any advice on the start up aside from the usual oil in the cylinders, fresh oil etc. Maybe a fresh fuel filter, new fuel pump? Should I service the injectors? My mechanic has the machine to do..any help, ideas, advice would be greatly appreciated. TYIA

Re: Out of Mothballs
For me rule of thumb to do the following
Clean tank/petcock
clean good working fuel pump
New fuel filter
clean flowed injectors
tank return valve cleaned and rebuilt. They stick closed and will raise your fuel pressure very high is stuck closed. Run rich foui plugs easily
Clean oil/filter
Usually the TB boots to head are dry hardened and will leak. Replace so it will run and idle.
Make sure the turbocharger is not full of oil in both compressor and turbine housings from sitting. Usually they are. If you start it it blows into the plenum making a lot of clean up work and also into the exhaust making even more of a mess. You can remove and simply wash it with mineral spirits carefully and lube the oil feed port and spin turbo so it has oil in bearings.
Doing this it should start right up idle it at 1200 to 13000 till hot with some soft revs when hot. It will smoke to burn of residual oils etc for 10 20 minuets.
Once running if the bike still smokes then you have to determine is it the turbo needs rebuilding? Or engine issues from sitting?
Good luck

Re: Out of Mothballs
Hi, Picking up on the list of activities to do when a bike comes out of mothballs (supplied by charlie)... I brought my bike out of mothballs a few months back. On the first ride there was a lot of black smoke and after about 10 minutes the bike cut out and wouldn't restart - inspection revealed brand new spark plugs were very badly fouled.
My actions to remedy were:
1. Fitted the "one-way" value see pic - many thanks to Charlie for making one for me
2. Cleaned oil out of the mufflers and the "h" pipe as well as the input duct to the air claeaner
3. Fitted new spark plugs
On restart the bike wouldn't idle and needed constant throttle intervention and after about 10 minutes cut out in same manner as previous time. I inspected the spark plugs this morning and again - massively fouled!
Any suggestions on where the oil could be coming from...
Many thanks

Re: Out of Mothballs
Look at the check valve on the tank .It might be stuck closed . Heres a thread on how to clean it .
