Top End Rebuild #...Oh hell I lost count

Post by 750turboguy »

Back in September I was rebuilding the top end because the base gasket was leaking really bad.

So I tore the engine down and discovered a few things along the way. My forward motor mounts were all goo from a ton of oil and after 41 years of age...but then life happened AGAIN and I had to put the project on hold.

Now.......as soon as frickin Christmas is over I'm moving the dinning room table to the living room and rollin the bike right into my kitchen to work on it indoors.

Back in September I took my cylinder, pistons and rings to a local shop and had the guy mic everything out. I also picked up the 810 kit for a sizeable price and was gonna upgrade but then Archie called me from the shop and told me my cylinders, pinstons and rings were in terrific shape and I should put the thing back together...after honing out the cylinders a lttle bit.......

So now I'm torn...should I just reassemble or go with the 810 kit? I mean, its all apart. And if I reassemble...can I reuse the piston ring clips or should I try to find new ones?

Unless you're going to do a load of performance upgrades, I'd stick with the standard pistons. If you go for 810cc, it's best to upgrade the liners, otherwise the standard ones bored out become very thin and have very little lead in chamfer remaining for the pistons. I recall on this forum that GPX750 liners are recommended but more machining work is involved.
Always replace the gudgeon pin circlips, they're cheaper to buy than running the risk of ruining your bores and pistons, should one come out. I know from bitter experience, a dislodged circlip makes a costly mess.

Just put it back together. I would get new rings and clips just for peace of mind. Why mess with it unless you think you need more.

Its only original once . :beer

Thanks guys.
I'm leaning towards keeping everything stock and just putting it back together. The only problem is the piston pin clips. New ones? From where? Anyone know of something compatible?

Thanks everyone.

Just on a whim I punched the std piston rings part number into ebay and found four people selling rings so I picked up a set of four...as well as new clips. Too bad pistons weren't available.

Lookin forward to getting this thing back together. I'l post pics and videos of the rebuild as I go.

First step is to clean everything up, scrape the old gaskets, etc....
