Twin rebuilt with a twiste

Post by Turbocanuk »

Here I am true to my word. :victory
Referred to my previous post..

So I hear by commit.. This should be fun if not expensive.. :pasties

The way I see this, at first I wanted to simply do a complete restoration to original of both bikes. But, to be honest, it sounds a little boring to me.
These bikes just screem to be tune and tweak.

I want bikes I can ride on a good day. No racing or nothing cazy. Just fun bikes to open up throttle and enjoy the open road.

So tell me if this makes sense to you, my intention is to do one fully original restored from the ground up.
The second one will be my daily fun rider. I will install 810cc kit, ZX11 front Suzuki Gsx 750r rear (I already have the rear swing arm), boost contoller. My aim is to bring it in the 150hp range (for now ) :dribble:

Here are the bikes before surgery.

I have a question for you guys.

One of the bikes will be upgraded with a 810cc piston kit, race mode enable, boost controller, and BOV. That bike has the HPU turbo in.
This bike will still be use as a daily user. I will not be adjusting boost pressure after tuning on the dyno.

My question is can I run 15 psi of boost on a daily basis without putting strain on the engine? How this affect the life of the engine.

Sounds like great plans to me .

Answer to your question , if your in race mode and you know for sure your fueling is correct and your running no less than 93 octane ... you will be safe at 15 lbs of boost . You also need to make sure your fuel pressure regulator is working correctly and your bike is in great working order . The factory FPR raises 1 psi for every 1 psi of boost .
If it's not working that way , you will melt a piston .
If your fueling is not correct you will melt a piston .
If you're using less than 93 octane you could melt a piston
If you're boosting over 15 psi you could melt a piston.

I run 15 psi with stock bore but with every other upgrade and it's been on the dyno to check fueling.

Good luck

Thanks for the reply.

I know that proper fueling is the key.
The last thing I want is to melt those pistons.

I will go easy on the dyno.

Do you think I should consider installing a high pressure fuel pump with adjustable pressure regulator. I'm an advocate of keeping things simple for reliability reason.

At this stage, I'm far from dyno time. I'm still gathering parts and informations. I just received my piston kit two days ago.
Also I'm doing major repairs on my workshop. Things are moving forward. I should start the built in May.

Please note that the piston clearance of 0.038 mm indicated on the box is too little
I chose 0.06-0.07

And one more thing: I would weigh the pistons complete with bolt .

At the time I had to buy a replacement piston, which weighed 6 grams less than the others.

i sent this one back .

That's why I bought a complete set and the people at Wiseco in the Netherlands weighed the 4 and put them together accordingly, and there was only a 1 gram difference.

I know about the clearance specs from manufacturer are not good. I've read that on this forum somewhere. I will make sure I have .0025 to .003" of clearance.

Good advise about checking the weight of the pistons.

Thanks mate. :beer

Wiseco was speccing something like 0.04 if I remember correctly.

I got a freshly bored 810 kit from the previous owner (never used), and he had Jan Smit Powerparts (a kind of legendary drag racer) do the job.
I measured them and they were around 0.055 clearance, if I remember correctly.

My wiseco pistons measured undersize, 68.96.
And the cylinders were bored and honed to 69.01-69.02

I haven't driven the bike yet, only test starting so I can't tell anything reliability yet. :-D

Anyways, the pistons are quite tapered, so the minimal clearance will only count for the very bottom part of the skirt.
At the top there's a lot of clearance, I wonder if they are designed with more taper as well, this could also explain the small clearance spec.

Ok! It's started.
I've installed the SRAD 750 swingarm. I'm happy with it. It's nice and sturdy. No plays anywhere. I will be using a 17 inch zx7r rear wheel. 5.5" rim with a 180 x55 tire. At this point I made bushings and eyeballed the wheel about centered with the frame. I will do final centering ounce the front end is installed.

Now for the front end. I got a Zx11 front end to fit. When I bought it I was surprised how the down tubes are much larger then the turbos. Even the distance between tubes is much wider.
First thing I want to validate if I got the right front end?
The tubes are 43mm in diameter. Turbo yoke center to center is about 189mm where the zx11 is 205mm.

Also, I doing the 530 conversion. Man finding a 530 pitch sproket 50T is problematic. Anyone can tell me were to buy. Most infos I can find were out dated.

I will try to post pictures.

I'm making progress. I've focus on turbo1 witch is the original to specs rebuilt. Here are some pics.

I've cleaned, repainted or polished everything. New bearings everywhere. Fork rebuild, swingarm rebuild, rear suspension rebuilt with original rear shock.
