Looking at a Turbo

Post by Skid Mark »

Hi all,
I was directed here from another forum. I have a few kawakers, but don't have a blower ...yet!
I'm looking at one Monday, I have an idea what they are making, the thing is this is subjective. The bike I'm looking at is meant to be 'original'
including the Turbo. It is a low no. frame no. with about 65K KM ( German bike) I'm just not sure what it is worth. Bike looks straight in photos apart from a custom seat. with Approx. 42K mile on the clock I'm guessing the turbo will need work sooner then later and perhaps some head work also. Owner says it is running great.
Can anyone advise on, what to look for, what may need work and estimated cost and approx value based on the info above. I appreciate its 'how long is a piece of string'. But I would do with some good advice. I'm based in Ireland so Irish/UK prices are probably most relevant.
Thanks in advance
Phil

Prices in UK for a complete original but tired bike that needs fettling for mot would start around £5K. A bike with mot perhaps £6K. A fresh well sorted bike around £8K to £10K.
A turbo rebuild with shipping around £400 to £500. There's a chap called Charlie on this forum that does that work. The engines a beefed up 750 aircool based on the old z650, so easy to work on. Most will smoke a little on start up but this should clear after a ride. If it doesn't then it's possibly oil that needs cleaning out the induction side which is common. Beyond that it's possibly a turbo or top end rebuild, neither of which is to challenging but would need to be negotiated in your buying price.

Also these bikes like clean oil and fuel systems. If the oil is black and smells old it places question on how well the bike has been maintained. Also check the fuel filter beneath the right hand side panel, they are transparent, if it looks darkish brown then the fuel system may not have been maintained properly. The fuel system is particularly important, clogged injection nozzles will cause the bike to run lean, an enemy of turbo charging as it can cause overheating to the extent that it will melt the engine.

Cheers Kawadoodle,
That is exactly the advice I’m looking for!
We will see how it goes.
If I do get it I will, no doubt be looking for plenty more advice.

You're welcome, you'll find everything you would ever need to know about the turbo on this forum. It's been going for so long, most things, and work arounds have been discussed in detail.
