Well that was an interesting adventure tonight!
I left home for a 25 K ride to go to training and going out of the drive I heard this horrendous noise on the lh side of the bike (Could feel it through the footpeg!) just for a second though. My first thought was the alternator dish might be loose. I had a bike that happened to & no big deal just tightened it up. Well I was leaving the hall to come home & it did it again then about 10 K's later it started missing. Noticed the lights had all gone dim so flicked them off & realized the alternator dish must have lost a magnet! Made about another 8 k's before it shut down completely. My mate came past & gave me a lift into work to grab a new battery, working in a battery shop really comes in handy! went back put the battery in & rode it home with all these horrible noises coming from the alternator! Got home found a couple of alternator dishes & 1 winding. Question the 2 dishes are different. one has 3 big magnets & the other has 6 small magnets. Interchangeable? Is one type better than the other?
I'll post some pics of the mess tomorrow if it's as spectacularly destroyed as I think it is. Good thing is the alternator isn't in the oil like my GS is otherwise I'd have a hell of a mess to deal with!

ouch! hope its not too bad mate
I assume that its the rotor with the 6red magnets thats your talking about?
the fully enclosed rotor in the pic is off a zr7 & it fits the crank rotor the turbo stator is different but a N/A fits as does a zr7 rotor if you cannot mend the turbo bits, good luck mate

Fixed details later! Alternator Bolt came loose. Well not quite fixed. Bits later out ready to go. It could be back together easy BUT I look in the base manual and the rotor Bolt is 51 Ft lb and the turbo manual says 94 ft lb. Now besides the fact my tension wrench only goes up to 40 (gonna have to borrow, beg or steal one from somewhere) that is a huge difference and 94 lb? That seems excessive? Worse is I have no way of holding the thing while I do it up. Manual shows a special tool and I'm pretty sure I've never touched it before. So how the hell do I keep hold of it while I tighten the Bolt??? What does every else do?

just put it in gear and hold the rear brake. once all the chains and gears bind up it will torque.

Yeah I wasn't keen on doing that. I wrapped a tie-down around the rotor and tied it to the centrestand.
Out at the moment getting it to run a bit better before the Toy run. Helps having lots of spares.

It still makes me wonder why they have a different torque setting for the Na? Jez kindly reminded me there is 2 different tapers they use. Maybe that's part of it.
