Front forks leaking .grrr
Front forks leaking .grrr
Hi guys , I've just joined as I'm half way through a rebuild . I drop the engine in Monday or tomorrow, and I see fork oil coming out the rh fork top there's no engine in yet so it's light and its dribbling out ?
New forks seals were fitted not long ago , what should be the problem ? And are 1100 forks the same ? should I leave the am cover off ? For clearance ?.. And what Side is best to go in as the engine came out the rh side .? (Looked like the engine should come our the lh side ? So many questions I,m sorry ..
I wait lol

Fork Seal Clean-up / Economy Seal Replacement / Engine In
Howdy Venny. You can make a Seal Mate cleaning tool from camera film or flat plastic.
Smooth your tool edges with fine grit to avoid nicks or tears of soft inner seal edge.
The seals may not have seated properly and the video shows a quick method.
Check chromed finish thoroughly for pitting, scratches and sand scarring.
Someone be by to let you know if the 750 and 1100 forks interchange.
Linked (Pg 88) K's step X step 'right side' engine removal/install .
Also linked turbo service supplement for all unique systems.
Camera film as tool.
Forego the expense of dedicated tool acquisition.

Re: Front forks leaking .grrr
I did the plastic thing down the forks with total success , now I,lol see if she leaks by morning ,then a new seal . I still don't know if 1100 forks are turbo forks . I'm sure there the same ?

Venny,
It's worth trying to seat leaking new seals before replacement by pumping front end with the brakes as shown in Seal Mate (2nd video!)
What is your plan? Swapping tubes or an entire fork assembly?
Hopefully someone will be along with accurate rake/trail/travel/width and parts interchange facts.
Kawasaki would be the best source for correct fork specs.
You can select any Make/Model in the left boarder on Motorcycle Specifications site: http://www.motorcyclespecs.co.za/model/ ... o%2083.htm
MCS Excerpts:
"1984-85 GPz750turbo Front Suspension: 37mm air-adjustable forks, adjustable anti dive, 130mm wheel travel
1984-85 GPz1100 Front Suspension: 37mm Kayaba hydraulically activated air drive abutments for air pressure, 150mm wheel travel.
GPz 900 ~ Front Suspension: 39mm Telehydraulic forks air assisted."
Note: Different tube diameters in same MCS GPz900 article 'chart then description'? /^X
"The GPz900's air-assisted front fork features 38mm stanchion tubes, the biggest ever used on a Kawasaki sport bike. The tubes were set 10mm farther apart than the GPz1100's to accommodate tires even wider"

Re: Front forks leaking .grrr
Forks pitted, get emrechromed.
Don't just do seals do the. Bushes as well, use genuine Kwak
Engine goes in and out the right side,
Won't go in with both the head and lower sump on.
If you've painted the frame, wrap the lower tubes with cardboard and tape to protect em.

1984 ZX750E1 (needs a few little bits), 1984 ZX750E1 being built (810 motor on the floor), 1986 GPz810 (Debben head, turbo chassis, longer, lower, dirty and black), 1995 ZZR1100 D3, 1987 GPz750 in black, red and silver.
Re: Front forks leaking .grrr
1100 seals are exactly the same....I've just recently fitted my spare turbo fork seals in my 1100 unitrack. I would be careful buying NOS seals from the likes of eBay as they may be 30 years old.....I've fallen in that trap before...NOS seals I previously bought still in the original package were harder than the ones I took out. I personally would go to a Kawasaki dealer for them
Re: Front forks leaking .grrr
This is a job I'll have to tackle at some point. Great info to refer to. Thanks

Re: Front forks leaking .grrr
I did mine and it is a really simple job, worth doing the anti dive seals at the same time as lots of shit collects there and they are probably seized.
Re: Front forks leaking .grrr
Thank you for uploading video and info..my seals are leaking also, might try to Clean up the seals first.

Re: Front forks leaking .grrr
i replaced my fork seals with aftermarket seals at least twice within a short period to find them leaking within weeks, original kawasaki seals solved my problems

X2! All leaking fork seals were directly related to neglected units IME. Full tear-downs, meticulous cleaning and complete rebuilds only ever prevented a return of seal bleeding. OEM whenever possible. Ariete's seal material and proprietary install grease DO make considerable difference.
