How to post pictures here

A picture speaks a thousand words so they say, and it's easy to post photos here, but there is one restriction and that is size. Modern digital cameras and even phones take very large photos and we only have a limited amount of space on our server (where this forum is stored), so if you want to store your pictures on here they need to be 1200 pixels (dots) wide or less. 1000 pixels is plenty big enough. Here is a 1000 pixel wide photo:



Plenty big enough for most screens. If your pics are already 1200 pixels wide or less and the file size is less than 1mb they are good to go. Open the "send reply" box on any thread and click "Upload attachment".



Then click "Choose file". Browse to the file on your computer and double-click it. Then click "Add the file". You can then add a comment about the file if you want, and if you want to, click "upload attachment" again to add another picture. When you are done, click "Submit".

If you have no idea how big your photos are, or the above doesn't work, read on...

If you're not sure how big the photo you want to use is, go to the folder on your computer where it is stored and hover the mouse over the file. It doesn't matter which view the folder is in....icons, details, list...after a few seconds a box will pop up like this, showing the dimensions of the picture.

In this case the photo is 567 pixels wide and 113 pixels high, which is fine to upload as an attachment because it is less than 1200 pixels wide and 1000 high, our limit.

If the dimensions are over 1200 wide or 1000 high (over over 1mb file size), then the picture is too big to load as an attachment. You can still use it, but you'll have to host it elsewhere (like Photobucket, Flickr etc), or you'll have to resize the picture smaller.

Let's look at the first option and use Photobucket. Photobucket is free, and you can find it (surprise!) at http://www.photobucket.com. Once you've registered it's simple to upload your photos into an album. It doesn't matter what size they are. Once you've uploaded a photo there, you can make it appear here.

Select your photo in photobucket and scroll down the page a bit. Over on the right is a box title "Image links". Click on the last box, "IMG code". The box should flash yellow and say "copied". Now start your post here, and instead of typing, hold down the CTRL key and press "V" on the keyboard. Some blurb about the photo should appear. Click "Submit", and go back to view your post. See the pic now? Cool!

If the picture is way too big, you can resize it in photobucket. The photo on your computer won't be changed...the one on photobucket is a copy.

Ok let's look at the second option - resizing on your computer so that you can upload it straight to here as an attachment. There's a program on every (Windows) computer called Paint. Open your picture in Paint and click "resize". Type 1000 in the horizontal box and click the "pixels" radio button. Then "save as" and give your resized picture a new name so that your original full size picture doesn't get altered.

Then go back to post #1 in this thread and find the new picture with "upload attachment".

That's about it. Give it a go. Practice. We won't laugh if you get it wrong, honest...

I can't say I have any hassles uploading pictures, but remember there is a Kb size restriction as well. I have to resize and compress most of the photos I upload.

One thing I don't seem to get is the large image as per your sample. Mine has to be clicked on to see in the large format. :

If you upload an attachment, you get the thumbnail view like yours, which you have to click on to see full size.

If you host the pic elsewhere, like on photobucket, the picture appears full size without clicking.

It's better for us if you host elsewhere, as it saves us space, and there is no size restriction (really big pics might disappear off the end of the forum page though).

Yes, it's true. Somehow, for whatever reason the picture on photobucket and what is now displayed differ. It gets cropped for some reason, showing Padd one bike length ahead.

It probably got cropped because it's too wide for the forum. Another reason for the 1000 pixel limit. You can stick 5000 pixel wide photos on photobucket, but most people won't have a screen big enough to display them, and scaling them down to fit your screen is just a waste of bandwidth.
