Post by Turbocanuk »

Hi there,

My name is Ben, I'm from Canada. I use to be a member here long time ago. I own 2 GPZ 750 Turbos, one 1984 and one 1985. Both are running. Winter is coming and I will have time to work on my bikes. The project is to do a complete restoration of both bikes. I will be asking all sorts of questions and seeking advice from you guys.

I look forward talking with you all.

Cheers.. :beer

Ok here we go.. I will try make a long story, short.

Like I said, I have 2 turbos.

I bought the first one in 1998. It was a runner fully stock. It was in, not so great shape, paint was ok. I cleaned it up, polished the windscreen and aluminium mid fairing, and out on the road I was. I was having a blast and my friends were impressed by the performance. One of the guys was running a Susuki GS 1150 and eating my dust all day long.

After couple of years a came across the second bike.. a basket case, I mean it. The bike was in pieces, engine gutted open and spread in baskets.
Turbo was blown. To me it was still interesting for parts and I also had the title of ownership. I bought it for 400$ cad, which was about $300 usd. So in the garage it went in a dark corner for eternity. A few years went by, and on a could miserable Quebec winter day I was in the garage looking for something to do.. So I took the baskets out in the open.
(By the way, I know my way around motorcycles, born in 1965, broke both arms on my very first motorcycle ride at age 10 (smashed my cousin minitrail into my uncle car. It was epic.. I was hooked), bought my first bike at 14 and always had motorcycles since. I worked as a cnc operator/programmer in many aircraft machine shops around Montreal).
Ok back to the garage.. I had two long makeshift tables out of saw horses and plywood. Using parts diagrams and beer, I laid down all the parts and pieces in order, trying to sort out what was there and what was missing. To my surprise everything seem to be there. But the turbo was fried.

At the time I spent hours on this website. And, (I hope I won't wake up any ghost) at the time there was a 750 turbo guru name Mike Chestnut.. ok I said it. I got in touch with him and sent him the turbo for a rebuilt. And yes it was expensive.

In the mean time I spent the hole winter putting back together bike and refurbished/reassembled the engine. In late march I installed my fresh and expensive turbo in. Put gasoline in. Crossed my fingers.. and pressed the start button. To my absolute surprise the bike came alive on the second press, blue smoke and empty beer can filled the garage. Except from a very small oil leak front side cover gasket, the bike was running just fine. I took it for a ride in all about 15km. Took it back to the garage. After that shit it the fan. Life happend, broke up with the wife and took a nose dive. All my stuff went in storage for many years. When I got back down to earth I just had pickup the pieces. Both bikes were left in a humid storage unit. I took them out about 4 years ago. So here I am... ready for round two!

I will try to post pictures of the bikes I took a few days ago.

Please bear with me this is only the premise of telling you about my rebuilt projects. :pissed:

Welcome back Ben. :thumbup

I, for one, have also had the journey of life to deal with and a Turbo was part of it in the mid-late 80's and from 1999 to now. Probably find a fair number of us here are the same. One difference is I relocated 6000 miles or so between Turbo 1 and now. :?

My next thing to do/challenge/task is to rebuild an engine and assemble all the parts I have into a bike. Won't be for a year or two though. :popcorn

Looking forward to seeing a few pics, old & new. :)
