Hey guy I was pulling apart my kz750 engine that I am rebuilding for turbo use and I realized something. The cylinder head will drop right onto the cylinder and studs backwards, all bolt holes line up, just gotta figure out chain guides and cam timing. I was wondering if anyone here has actually tried it?
Im gonna go buy a degree wheel later today to play with the cams. I hope its possible tho as id like to have the intercooler and intake plenum as one piece in front of the engine then build a small exhaust manifold to locate the turbo under the seat. Ive never liked the idea of a hot turbo hanging off the front of the engine close to the front tire. Either way the plans are a gt20/25 series turbo, Microsquirt efi, flexfuel senor and big injectors/pump, 810 wiseco kit, zr7 oil pump, mild head porting, refreshed bottom end, new clutch rubbers and HD springs for now.
Reversed Cylinder head?
Re: Reversed Cylinder head?
I thought about this a while back. I was thinking you would have to reverse grind the cams. Maybe I just over thought it.

Re: Reversed Cylinder head?
I recall when placing my head gasket that the front part (exhaust side) of the cam chain tunnel protrudes out further than the back part (intake side). Also the two dowels for precise location of the head are on the exaust side studs. unless you are thinking of flipping the barrels around too. kz750 and zx750 engine are same geometry wise right?

Re: Reversed Cylinder head?
My memory tells me I have seen this done on other motocycle engines. Can't say I think it would be a good idea on a road bike otherwise they would all be like it but as an engineering project it would be very interesting. Strange but interesting.

You should try to know everything about something & something about everything.
Re: Reversed Cylinder head?
Lm sure it could be done but seems like the frame would be in the way .

Re: Reversed Cylinder head?
wait you dont like the turbo off the front of the engine? THats how the fastest bikes in the world are setup...lol And all the 80s mags raved about the setup...lol
There is no benefit for the turbo to reverse the cylinder head. If you go to www.mrturbo.com you can see plenty of examples of poor engineering...lol
Including "suck thru" turbo systems with a carb mounted right on the compressor intake. Works great for tuning!!

Re: Reversed Cylinder head?
Im not totally against having a turbo hanging off the front but this is an aircooled bike, why have a very hot manifold and turbo infront of the cylinder and head? Doesn't make much sense does it? I know many many bikes run it that way but if the head on a KZ can be reversed then why not run it reversed? Yes the frame will be in the way partially of 2 intake ports but thats not a hard thing to remedy.
Btw this isn't going to be "street legal" road going bike, it is not getting lights or mirror or any of that shit. As I would call it, a muscle bike. Too fast for its own good and only used to get the adrenaline pumping, either at the track or offroad. Much like my dirtbike that didn't get dirty, it just drank lots of VP 110 and hauled ass

You'd rather have it under your nutsack instead?Joelgratton wrote: Ive never liked the idea of a hot turbo hanging off the front of the engine close to the front tire.
A supercharged nitro bike is another matter. They use the exhaust for downforce and there are other packaging reasons that make this a good idea. Not on a turbo though. Hang it out in the breeze where it is nice and cool
