Re: Sat for 20 years
Hi All,
sorry for not updating but had a bit of a hospital stay and have been recovering , however before i went in i pulled off the throttle bodies, cleaned the injectors as best i could , replaced the manifolds and fitted an APE manual cam chain adjuster and yes one bolt hole was stripped, put it all back together and it ran much better but still fluffy low down and the fuel tank was pressurising, so changed the valve in the tank and that fixed that, fitted the vacuum gauges and 3 were a 1.1 except one which was about 0.6 so very low ( not sure what they should be?
so next is balancing the bodies ( didn't have the right tools at the time) and changing the ignition coils to Dyna one as mine look very aftermarket .
hopefully i will do a bit this weekend.
Thanks
Mark

Re: Sat for 20 years
I hope the hospital stay wasn’t for anything too serious. Glad to see an update! The readings don’t really matter too much. The most important thing, is that they are close to equal as you can make them. If one cylinder won’t move no matter hoe much you adjust it either way, check for a vacuum leak on that one.Mark RD250LC wrote: ↑Thu Oct 19, 2023 4:03 pm fitted the vacuum gauges and 3 were a 1.1 except one which was about 0.6 so very low ( not sure what they should be?
Later, Doug

Just to mention sometimes the fuel cap gives a problem with venting and causes the fuel tank to pressurise. If you have any futher problems, look up the fuel cap modification on this forum.

i had seen that on here , i did strip and clean the cap , it seemed to be an issue the the pressure valve but i may mod the cap as well .Kawadoodle wrote: ↑Thu Oct 19, 2023 4:59 pm Just to mention sometimes the fuel cap gives a problem with venting and causes the fuel tank to pressurise. Re: Sat for 20 years
So, i have been doing lots of stuff on the Turbo, balanced the TBs, fitted iridium plugs as the new standard ones died after 0 miles and after checking everything else it was the plugs, i think they were just fouled , anyway i took it for an MOT today and she passed no advisories , but i noticed now the fuel gauge always reads empty (filled it up) so i have a red flashing warning light al the time and the exhaust leaks from the engine/exhaust so new copper gaskets and studs as mine has Allen bolts.
mine starts showing boost around 3500/4000 rpm is that about right?
all in all im very happy and thanks to all who have fixed stuff for me and offered help and advise and no doubt i will need help again!!
Oh and its F***ing heavy and corners like an oil tanker
but quicker than i thought it would be

Re: Sat for 20 years
great news, it now has an MOT cert. The fuel gauges are never the best, there are some posting on here on how you can dismantle and adjust the tank sender
It will handle a little different from the RD250 but like a tanker not sure that's fare
You have found your next project, how to improve the handling ....beware the cost
Good to know another is back on the road, great result

Re: Sat for 20 years
Congratulations on getting the bike MOTd.
The fuel gauge is a variable resistor, using a wiper across a wire wound board. Typically the board distorts to the extent that the wiper no longer makes contact. If you straighten and add a stiffner to the board helps. Fine adjustment is achieved by bending the float arm. It's all a bit hit and miss and I'd never place too much trust in it, but it's nice to see some bars on the gauge.
I quite like how the standard bike handles, stops me riding too fast, those days are behind me. It's the straight line acceleration that makes me grin, it's power delivery reminds me of a two stroke hitting the power band.
Have fun and don't over cook it in the bends.

Re: Sat for 20 years
Thanks guys, i will pull the sender out and have a look, and yes i was a bit harsh with the oil tanker comment , ive mainly had R1s since 2000 and LCs/ DTs , it does require a bit more input to get her round a bend a bit like a VF1000F2 i had years ago.
