9s on a budget.
9s on a budget.
Hey all,
Been a long time but have been lurking from time to time.
I've sucked so much info from this site, though it best to give u guys something to read at least...
This build will be budget all the way, only spending to improve performance.
little history for ya.
Purchased the bike way back in 2005 in France, thrashed the shit out of it for many years.
2012 she was thrown into the back of a damp barn, pretty much forgotten, but recently I've decided to ship to Australia.
Around December last year dismantled and placed on a pallet to save on shipping cost.
Bike arrived Feb 2020 and sat in the corner until this month.
Local drag strip has a race your mates in two weeks, so decided to throw a zzr1100 front and rear on the old girl.
Front end not a drama, but some issues with the rear being so much wider than the standard swinger.
Managed to start the old girl after 8 years replacing every rubber hose due to that ethanol crap.
Test ride showed very little boost, so I fabbed a fitting to pressurize the intake, man there were so many leaks I'm impressed the bike made any boost?
With that sorted of too the strip for my first ever run down the track.
Max boost only 14 psi, couldn’t get to waste gate spring pressure set at 19 psi, messed around with eBay boost controller, but didn't produce any additional boost, carbon at the dump pipe, so Im thinking boost creep.
Best time was 10.7 pretty happy with that.
So now the quest will be to arrive in the nines, I know its a big ask for a bike with 40,000ks on the clock, bottom end never been apart.
More boost and maybe a lock-out clutch will be needed.
Anyway, next drags programmed for March next year, same time as Lake Gairdner speed week, (Aussie Bonneville)
Decisions decision, will try to dyno in the next few weeks.
More to come......

Re: 9s on a budget.
For sure, WOW. Good job by you being able to throw her together and get her down the track for the first time and achieve those times. But also a testament to the Grand Prix Z1 motors back in the day. What a motor, what a bike.

Re: 9s on a budget.
Hi All,
Time for an update.
Went to the strip last month, but no great progress, 10.60 was the best time.
Still struggling to boost above 14 psi, so made up a fitting to pressure test the intake with compressed air, from turbo to butterfly's.
Found a bunch of big leaks, also suspected the BOV leaking, so thats been removed.
Rebuilt the Garret T25 with an eBay kit, cost 30 Aussie bucks so better be good, turbo spins at idle so thats promising, (sorry Charlie)
Real problem with wheel stands in the first 3 gears, so going to try the strap (see photo) to pull the slack out of the front suspension, bit dodgy as its a modified bike tie down, could be illegal, soon find out? also will lower forks through the triple tree, I've made the dog bones on the rear suspension so will also lower the rear,
Any other bike setup ideas to stop the front from lifting?? tire pressures , rear shock compression dampening etc?
As this build is budget all the way, I've modified the cam chain tensioner, seems Ok.
Decided to chop off the exhaust, kind of regretting that now as the modified hayabusa muffler sounded way better.
Pulled some clutch springs out of my GPZ900, they seem to be stiffer than the turbos, so in they go with machined washers under the springs.
Drags on this weekend, hope to get nearer the 9s, but nothings guarantied right? especially with my old worn out clutch which has been reinstalled to do one more weekend.

You crazy Bastard! I like your style. Be interesting to see the strip results from your mods!

You should try to know everything about something & something about everything.

Re: 9s on a budget.
Nice work, you bettered your time from the first post. I run one of Charlies Billet HT10s but still the same issue, 1st, 2nd gear wheels will be out of control if you just hammer it and stay in it, sometimes 3rd. I would have to do all the same mods you are trying in order to have any hope of keeping the front end down.
Good luck next time around, stay safe.
I have a stock Turbo swing arm that has been extended? That could help.

Re: 9s on a budget.
You're going the right way with lowering it and with chasing more power. If you think wheelies are a problem at 14psi though wait til you fix the boost leaks and see 24psi! I've run 9s at stock wheelbase and foot shifting but it takes some riding!

That run it picked it up in first gear and only put it down at the finish. Still ran 10.4!

Lower and with 2" more wheelbase. Still wheelies, but ran 9.29.

Re: 9s on a budget.
Latest Update,
So, started the day with a test ride, nice day here in Cairns.
left the driveway with my homemade front shock pull down system on but with forks not compressed,
Turned to the right after leaving the carport which caused the strap to bind and me to go ass up at like 3 kmh, neighbours laughing, strike one.
Out on the highway, bike ran like a bag of nail, missing and farting, but thats a good thing, cause my home made cam chain adjuster lock nut wasn't tight and the bolt backed out all the way and ended on the road, engine making a really loud banging noise, I though fuck it Im not walking home, valves must be bent by now, but the noise got so bad I pulled over and walked a few Km, strike two.
Got the bike home and adjusted the cam chain adjuster, went for a ride, valves not bent, (amazing) now that the bike is making waste gate pressure 18 psi, clutch slipping like a slippery thing, its bloody violent now, think I preferred the power delivery when leaking boost, anyway heading home dropped my phone, so thats smashed, got home, changed back to the original clutch springs and spacers, loaded into the ute and thats my day, ready for tomorrow.
Found if I changed the petcock to Reserve it runs really bad, although fuel pressure is rock solid, back on the main, smoooths as, so think reserve is blocked.
Also its eating plugs, starts to break down once plugs start to foul, change with new plugs and back to smooth as butter, standard coils and leads unfortunately, no oil in the intake, so thinking rings and valve stems seals worn.
Anyway enough dribble from me,
Ill update how things go tomorrow, but thinking maybe I should change the heading to 10.5s on a budget?
cheers Jb
