OEM air filter vs K&N fitted to turbo?

Hi All,

I'm in the market for a 750 Turbo and although I've searched at some length on here I can't see any discussion regarding the pros and cons of standard vs "K&N"/pod type air filters.

I've looked at bikes with both setups and was wondering if it's best to stick with the OEM setup or is it OK if someone has deleted the link pipe etc and put a K&N on the turbo? Should further adjustments/modifications be made elsewhere when fitting a K&N or is simply bolting one on completely fine?

Stock air filters are fine on stock engine and IF you can find them in good new condition not falling apart. Many crumble out of the packaging which would get sucked into the compressor wheel of the turbocharger. The K&N R1080 is good replacement and upgrade for efficient flow to the turbocharger. Your correct it is not a issue using either one in good condition. Only caveat throw at you is the K&N if you get caught in a rain storm can get saturated and cause bike stumble getting wet. Buy the rain sock to put on if you need to quickly. Then move on.

Sorry for the late response , I don't come on here as often as I should. I've had a K&N in for over 24 years . The advantage is that it makes the bike breath a little easier leading to higher boost . Disadvantage is like Charlie mentioned , in heavy rain , it can suck up water and the bike will stumble a little and run slightly rough until the filter dries out . But I've only noticed that issue in heavy rain situations, so not often at least in my area .

You should clean it at least once a year . Because it's so close to the front tire , I do often see road grime, pebbles, sand etc in the pleats of the filter that should be cleaned out . I've never used the rain sock and it may solve each of these issues but otherwise, I personally would recommend a K&N to anybody . Not even sure they manufacture new oem filters and if that's the case then your buying old stock which can deteriate . Just wouldn't be safe in my opinion.

Very good points regarding using new old stock (which most probably are) OEM filters.

I'd choose only fair weather days to go out for a blast so the rain related problem shouldn't be an issue. Good to know though especially when using a hosepipe during cleaning and so avoid hitting the filter directly with the squirty end!

Now all I need to do is acquire the bike......
