What are the paint codes for the red and black on the bike?

Postby Lorcan » Sat Jan 18, 2014 5:51 pm

Q. What are the paint codes and where can I buy replacement graphics?

A. Ebony Black and Firecracker Red. In the UK these are available from RS Bike paints. In the USA order Kawasaki 602 Ebony and 606 Firecracker red from Colorrite

You can also use car paints Ford UA Darker Formula Black and Ford Colorado Red

or

PPG DBC 95473 Nero Aldebaran (ebony) and DBC 74795 Firecracker Red.

A good quality, accurate set of graphics can be ordered from http://www.afegraphics.com or forum member JezZedexE1.

And for the black frame? Please excuse my ignorance if this is posted elsewhere on the forum; I figured if this is posted anywhere it should be on this page.

I'm wanting to do a 'concours d'elegance' restoration and the factory paint doesn't appear to have an undercoat. My frame is so bad I can't make out what it is. Can someone please advise:

Finish: Satan or Gloss
Type: Enamel, Epoxy, Acrylic or otherwise
Code: (if not factory then the nearest PPG or other codes)
Supplier: I'm in Oz however I don't mind international shipping if that's what it takes to get the correct paint
volume/Application: Tin or Aerosol size (if available)

Many thanks in advance, cheers and a Happy 2017 to all....

Hi Mark,

If I were being as exacting, I would give RS bike paints a call +44 1707 273219
They may not deliver to Aus, but they do supply to the concours community across EU so will certainly know the original process, paint code & exact finish. Worth giving them a buzz to pick their brains disguising the Aussie accent at the outset if you have one that is :D

Best of luck

Cheers Chris, I've sent them an email (calling is difficult due to the time zones issue) and I'll post my discovery here for the benefit of all.

Reply from RS Bike Paint:

Hi Mark
Thank you for your message.
We have both the red and the black paints for this bike but not the frame paints I'm afraid.
Does this help you at all?...
Kind regards
Phil

So I'm thinking I'll need to chat to some local restoration paint specialist advertising in bike mags then decide from there.

Mark have you considered sandblast and powder coat for the frame. I only ask because it was the only thing you didn't mention. Powder might get a better finish than paint for concourse standards.

Powder coating was not done on the frames originally so for concours resto it would seem wrong. I personally don't like the process as it is too thick. Another thing is if rust does raise its ugly head, sorting it out properly is not easy. My thoughts are stay away from it. :popcorn

I used some black primer and gloss black top coat from Eastwood

Yes same here found painting more favorable than powder coating, took some red and black original sample from my bike to have a colour match from a auto paint shop. You will be surprise how good the match they could do nowadays.I chose acrylic paint for a DIY job at home with a 3hp air compressor. You could ask them to fill it up into spray aerosol cans also. :beer

Mine was stripped with media blast followed by etch prime and finished with 2k gloss black. Came up really good and does look better than powder coat.

I powder coated mine, good job but if you scratch paint at least you can touch it up.
You should try to know everything about something & something about everything.
