Charlie @ Evergreen wrote:Thats interesting. When I switched to a lithium battery my voltages were similar and it locked the battery after a few rides. Charge Voltage was to low. When I installed a new Ricks Alternator and a Mosfit Regulator the voltage at idle was 14.3 and have never had a issue. I noticed the engine ran smoother also..could be the higher voltage helps the ECU work optimally?? Maybe a standard acid battery can work on that charging voltage??
Hopefully some useful info.

Ohh I forgot to say, the voltage gets limited at 13.4v by the regulator.
I think my old external gsxr alternator setup which I was running before also limited the voltage at 13.5v so I guess this is normal.
I had a defective "load" wire once and then voltages went up to 14.8v and destroyed 3 batteries.... so im not sure you want to see 14v+, the limit is somewhere around that voltage. :D

Pretty sure 13.9 to 14.3 voltage is not a issue with overcharge. 14.5 plus I believe is overcharging..think Tack or someone knows off top of there head. I have no issues with overcharging and the electronics work perfectly. Headlight is bright even at idle, fires up in about 2 to 3 seconds..never did this before. You could be right about overcharging but its been like what almost 2 years with this setup no issues anything electronic since upgrading. :beer

Yeah I think most of them limit charging at a value between 13.5 and 14.5v.
It depends a bit on the regulator and I think also with what kind of stator is ran togheter with it.

I had also an old cb500 once (or well, my ex girlfriend had  ) and that one also charged too much because I used a combined reg/rec while the original system was with the separated ones and mechanical regulator (still the old system with a field coil).
It went up to 14.8v but overal did fine.. except once a year the battery was suddenly dead.

If it works it works! :-) Once I have the viton dampers in I will do a longer testride with mine and leave the lights on...maybe a short autobahn run across the border(2km from my house)... see what it does.

Sorry for having to ask a stupid question again.

Which alternator and which regulator is really the one with the greatest output?
I would like to have significantly more output than the stock 20A =240 watts.

Can you send me a link or the exact names

it is the ZR7 stuff , when yes can i use the stock cover ?

I got West Country Windings to re-wire my stator with more wires, which increases the output. I can't give you a hard number but that's an easy option while keeping the same rotor. And I use an Electrex MOSFET regulator/rectifier. Both easy mods.

Setup used for charging worked excellent. :thumbup
