Wooo New Wheel Theme and Lesson

Post by Detrailers »

Was not a huge fan off the all black wheels on this bike when I got it. Looked OK but I knew I could do better.

Yes it's a resto mod but I think it went to far past the OG look of the bike so I sourced another set of Zx11 wheels, had the rims polished, then masked them and painted the spokes. New Sportmaxes and I was done right?..... Wrong!

One painful lesson. Apparently 2 different axle sizes came on ZX11s.... Or they used this wheel on other Kawi models. The rear swap went smoothly but got a nasty surprise when I went to swap the front. Axle going into the bearings was like a size 12 foot going into a size 6 ballet slipper.

No problem I thought, I'll just swap the bearings. Punched out the bearings from wheel 1 and installed in wheel 2 but not so fast Jeff...... The spacer was wider for the first wheel with the bigger axle. So then started thinking that I could shorten the spacer but saw the inside of the wheel was different and knew of I didn't do a perfect cut on the spacer it might toast the bearings. The images of an over the bars episode flooded my mind as I sat there in a what do I do now daze.

Jazco paint stripper is amazing stuff. Better yet it comes in an aerosol can. One can applied and left to soak overnight, some brushing and alot of pressure washing and all the powdercoat from the original wheel was gone. Then off to the metal polishers for a week and then paint the spokes for a second time. I did a great job since it was my...... 2ND time painting a Zx11 front wheel in 2 weeks.

Bolted all back together and now with the wheels and the removal of the mini Hindenburg Zx11 front fender, bike looks like it should! Restomod but visual ques that harken back to the original machine. Last pic is what I started with.

Have a set of Zx11 wheels that I will post in the FS section.... Rear is black, and front is freshly polished with freshly painted red spokes... Check your axle size before buying lol

Maybe you don't understand what a resto mod is?

Nice looking to be sure but....... Back years ago I bought my Turbo because the way it looked turned me on. Now, I realize that replacement stuff is getting hard to find and some mods and restores may not contain original stuff which alters the look. But honestly...I still love my turbo just the way she is.
