An important part of
this bike and it's history is "Race Mode". When the bike was released
at the end of 1983 and over the few years following there were many rumours about a
secret "race mode" that was built in to the stock ECU by Kawasaki and
allowed the bike to run more boost. But in 1984, when this bike was
already one of the fastest you could buy, the prospect of even more hp
with only minimal modification would have made this bike WAY faster
than anything else, including the all-new liquid-cooled GPz900R which
was released few months later and was to be the flagship of the new
range of 16 valve bikes. So, as far as we can tell this information
was not generally released immediately.
In 2001 750turbo.com received a copy of the following
Kawasaki technical bulletin from Greig Frankham in Australia, which
gives full details of race mode. The bulletin specifically excludes USA
models so as not to land Kawasaki USA in trouble with the EPA, but
read on....
This mod has since been tried by dozens, if not hundreds, of
750turbo.com members with great results. The unmodded bike will cut
out, rather violently sometimes, at 12psi boost (stock boost is
7-10psi but 12psi can be reached with non-standard exhausts and/or air
filter alone). The "race moded" bike will carry on to 26psi (if you set
the wastegate that high), and carries on delivering extra fuel as
boost increases. Fine tuning with either a combination of TPS and fuel
pressure adjustments, or a Powercommander, is desirable however and
owners should monitor air/fuel ratios carefully. The air scoop is not
recommended.
Other site members including those in the USA have since
confirmed that this mod works on all 750 turbos. It's also
worth noting that Mike Chestnut at HPU claims that this mod results in
a default "get you home" map, not a race mode, and that race mode is
only available from his own modified ECUs combined with the wiring mod
described here. 750turbo.com reject that explanation, as a "get you
home" mode would be documented in the manual and also would give a DFI
warning on the tank console. The truth is, no ECU modification is
necessary, the wiring mod alone delivers extra fuel and allows high
boost levels.
The following document is the Kawasaki technical bulletin. Some of the
writing is a little vague, and can be confusing. Further guidance is
available in the forum. Note that for a quick, reversible, way to
activate race mode all you need to do is remove the brown wire from
the ECU.
